I used to think the extent of garden design meant finding where you could fit a 4'x4' square or 4'x8' rectangle. I am quickly realizing that Farmscape's box design lends itself well to creative use of space. As I've gotten more inventive with design, gardening has moved beyond simply creating a space to grow food and entered a world of delineated spaces that function as play areas, design elements, and seating areas.
Instead of sterile squares, we are now regularly working with L-shapes, tiered gardens, and demarcated plots. These new designs have yielded interesting benefits in function.

Non-linear edges can act as visual focal points and L-shaped boxes can intersect to create mazes for kids to play in. Adding tiers creates an elevation element that also breaks the garden into 4’x4’ levels to plant “patchesâ€Â of herbs or vegetables. U-shapes can also easily be built to create a walk-in feel with a clear entrance and exit point.
So when thinking about garden design, don't limit yourself to traditional squares and rectangles, get funky in the planning. Break up straight paths with off-center boxes or overlap lines-of-site with more than one raised-bed. You are limited only by your imagination.
