Farmscape Tackles Climate Change at Levi’s Stadium with Rooftop Garden
Levi’s Stadium, home to the San Francisco 49ers, is known for its touchdowns, cheering fans, and iconic moments—but there’s something happening high above the field that’s just as impactful. Farmscape is proud to be behind the creation and ongoing maintenance of the Faithful Farm, a nearly quarter-acre rooftop garden located nine stories above the stadium’s gridiron. This unique project isn’t just growing produce; it’s also tackling climate change and supporting urban biodiversity, as highlighted in a recent CBS News segment.
A Game-Changing Garden
The Faithful Farm is unlike anything else in professional sports. No other football stadium in America has an organic rooftop garden of this scale, and we’re thrilled to have played a role in designing, installing, and maintaining it. The garden produces a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, from strawberries to eggplants, with nearly 40 rotating crops grown sustainably throughout the year. This fresh produce is used in everything from game-day fare to private events, creating a direct farm-to-table experience for stadium guests.
As Jim Mercurio, Executive VP and General Manager of Stadium Operations, puts it, “The farm is the crown jewel of Levi’s Stadium.” It’s not just a talking point—it’s a working farm, providing produce for meals served during 49ers games, concerts, and other events held at the stadium.
Supporting Sustainability and Pollinators
One of the most remarkable aspects of the rooftop garden is its contribution to sustainability. With soil beds only 9 inches deep, the farm is drop-irrigated using recycled water, making it a model for water conservation in California’s dry climate.
The Faithful Farm is also more than just a food source; it’s a crucial stopover for pollinators. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, along with other migrating birds, all benefit from the biodiversity that the farm supports. By providing a haven for these species, the farm is playing a small but important role in maintaining urban ecosystems.
A True Team Effort
This project has been a collaboration from the start. Farmscape’s team worked closely with Levi’s Stadium and its chefs to ensure that the crops grown on the roof matched the needs of their kitchens. Chefs at the stadium regularly provide a “wish list” of ingredients they want to see on the farm, with crops like spicy mizuna and Brussels sprouts grown specifically for their culinary creations.
The farm’s produce is used not only for large-scale events but also in more intimate settings like private dinners and VIP receptions. The fact that all this is happening on a rooftop garden above one of the most well-known stadiums in the world makes the project even more special.
