Santa Monica Canyon

Residential Project

Project Summary

Set into a steep hillside in Santa Monica Canyon, this garden balances art and ecology — where sculptural materials meet soft, living texture. Farmscape was asked to design and build a landscape that complemented the home’s striking architecture and reflected the creative spirit of its fine-artist owner. The result is a space that feels both expressive and grounded, uniting structure and nature in one cohesive design.

Project Goals

  • Stabilize and enhance a steep hillside
  • Add bright, warming colors to the landscape
  • Blend edible, medicinal, and ornamental plantings
  • Create a low-water, low-maintenance garden

This project was a true collaboration. Guided by the homeowner’s artistic eye, Farmscape designed and installed a landscape that celebrates craftsmanship and connection to place. The sculptural Corten steel staircase became a central design feature, guiding movement through the steep site. Thoughtful lighting adds both function and atmosphere, enhancing safety without competing with the stairs’ dramatic form.

Design Process

  • The lower hillside of the project site was the second phase of the project. It was designed for maximum color, privacy, and to stabilize the hillside

  • The green roof planting design took many iterations to balance the intentions of height and beauty with the reality of keeping a garden happy and healthy in 4” of mineral rich soil

  • This is the installation plan for the LiveRoof, we ended up with a larger portion of sedum in the final mix

With little flat ground to work with, the design relies on layered plantings that bring color, stability, and movement to the slopes. Medicinal herbs, pollinator-friendly flowers, and textural foliage create a dynamic hillside that shifts with the seasons. A small, sunny terrace provides room for an edible garden, offering fresh herbs and vegetables just steps from the home.

A green roof above the studio extends the landscape upward, planted with hardy, low-water species suited to the coastal climate. Across the site, efficient drip irrigation supports abundant growth with minimal water use, ensuring the garden thrives year-round with little maintenance.

Farmscape transformed a steep, sculptural site into a cohesive garden that feels connected to its surroundings — thoughtful, functional, and full of life.

“Holding these rad radishes fresh from the soil, like the most deeply magical creations that could ever arise from a rich, dark bed — my heart beams total gratitude for your support of our tiny share in the bounty of this Earth.

Thank you for giving us the means to support the bees, bush jays, and the lady bugs we see from time to time. Many times it can feel like we are the hummingbird equivalent of LAX!”
