5 Paver Styles Our Designers Are Loving This Year

At Farmscape, we spend a lot of time thinking about the relationship between planting and hardscape—especially in edible landscapes, where materials need to feel both functional and deeply connected to the garden itself.

This year, our design team realized we kept returning to a handful of paving materials across projects, each bringing a unique quality to the landscape. From handmade textures to subtle tonal variation, these are a few of the pavers we’ve been especially drawn to lately.

Northern California landscape designer Max Miller has been especially drawn to the handmade quality of Orca Living’s pavers this year.

Their subtle variation in texture and tone brings warmth to contemporary spaces, helping modern landscapes feel more grounded, natural, and connected to the surrounding planting.

Southern California landscape designer Francisco Ruiz has been gravitating toward Angelus Paving Stones’ Antique Cobble I & II in the Gray-Moss-Charcoal blend for its subtle tonal variation and handcrafted character.

The softened edges and weathered texture give the material a timeless quality, while the layered neutral palette complements a wide range of garden styles and planting schemes without overpowering the landscape.

Design Associate John Mireles has been favoring CalArc pavers from Stepstone for their versatility, clean lines, natural color variation, and ability to bridge contemporary and traditional garden styles.

Their understated texture and earthy tones integrate easily into planting-forward landscapes, creating hardscapes that feel refined without becoming overly formal.

They’re also an excellent choice when blending new hardscape elements with existing concrete surfaces.

As a landscape architect, I’m always looking for materials that balance beauty, durability, and a strong connection to nature. That’s why I selected the Trails Collection paver in a terrazzo finish from Concrete Collaborative. With a wide range of textures and colors available, the collection offers plenty of flexibility for different design styles.

I was drawn to the Terrazzo Pebble Mix in Ebony for its playful materiality and refined finish, which evokes the feeling of a streambed—especially after a rain. The exposed aggregate’s soft marble pebbles add natural texture and visual depth while maintaining a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

I find this style particularly effective in hospitality-inspired gardens and entertaining spaces, where the hardscape plays a significant role in the overall experience while still maintaining a strong connection to nature.

And, of course, reusing materials is always in style. Whether it’s broken concrete, reclaimed brick, or salvaged flagstone, we’re always excited to keep one less load out of the landfill.

Costs can vary significantly depending on the material and its condition, but if you have existing hardscape materials on-site, we’d be happy to assess their potential for reuse alongside our installation team.

From edible gardens and gathering spaces to pathways and patios, we design landscapes where planting and hardscape work together to create beautiful, functional outdoor spaces.
