Project Summary

The client was undertaking a comprehensive landscape refresh for this 86-unit apartment complex in the historic neighborhood of West Adams. With full sun exposure throughout most of the central courtyard and a desire to provide fresh produce for new and prospective residents, there was an ideal blank canvas for an edible garden.

Project Goals

  • Make an edible garden area in the central courtyard a focal point in the landscape design
  • Provide meaningful weekly yields for residents to enjoy, to be accomplished by abundant growing space and focused crop selections so there would be a critical mass of favorite crops to distribute
  • Encourage residents to gather in the garden, while providing passive enjoyment as they’re moving through the property
Citrus orchard provides a variety of abundant fresh fruit for residents

We consulted with landscape designer Paul Davidson of pdi Consulting on the layout, materials and fruit tree selections. Yield estimates and sun studies helped guide the scale and location of the garden.
