Colma Veterans Village

Multi-Family Project

Project Summary

In 2016, we began working with Mercy Housing on this brand-new, innovative housing project exclusively for veterans just south of San Francisco. Mercy had the vision to provide a Farmscape for residents as a way to build community while providing a super-local organic fresh food source. Thanks to the supportive housing model, we are also able to work with Brilliant Corners to support their programming. All parties — residents, designers and developers — actually got together to plant the trees, making this project a huge success.

Project Goals

  • Develop a garden for passive garden therapy, giving veterans a meaningful project to maintain and a peaceful place to relax
  • Fresh organic produce in a location that doesn’t have grocers within walking distance
  • Create a park-like environment from the street view and for all visitors
The design focused on creating a calm setting as passive garden therapy for the Veterans

We provided design consultation for two  of our  favorite collaborators, Bruce Jett of Jett Landscape Architecture and Van Meter Williams Pollack Architecture. These architecture teams loved working on the farm so much they came out and planted trees with us! Additionally, we designed programming with Brilliant Corners Supportive Services to help them support the residents in developing a garden therapy program.

“I have had the pleasure of working with the Farmscape team on Colma’s Veterans Village project. The service is second to none, and the professional knowledge is exceptional. I would highly recommend Farmscape and their team to anyone attempting to improve their outdoor space.”
