Bel Air

Residential Project

Project Summary

We repurposed an underutilized corner of an existing landscape, creating an edible garden in an area that previously had a trampoline and play equipment. A custom gate and fence separate the space from the rest of the yard with generous gravel pathways surround our cedar raised beds for ample vegetable production.

Project Goals

  • Create an edible garden destination in a previously underutilized corner of the landscape
  • Provide abundant raised bed growing space for vegetables, herbs and cut flowers; surrounding pathways should be wide enough to allow vining crops like melons and winter squash to sprawl
  • Create a “green screen” that softens the retaining wall
Fruit trees and a passionfruit vine soften the tall retaining wall at the back of the space

We started with a canvas of freshly graded flat space created after a large land-slide and transformed it into a fresh, permeable garden, ready to grow food and mitigate winter rainstorms.

Design Process

If the project elements are pre-selected, some spaces are straight forward enough for a single, scaled, hand-drawn schematic plan.

Custom fence and entry gate
Six cedar raised beds
Ample gravel pathways provide convenient access throughout the garden
Lemon, lime and pomegranate trees
