Project Summary
Inspired by the clients’ commitment to sustainability, Farmscape designed a garden that transforms a once fully hardscaped property into a vibrant, regenerative landscape. Salvaged concrete from the old basketball court was repurposed into both a striking crevice garden and concrete pavers used throughout the site, while new growing spaces rebuild soil health and support abundant food production.

Project Goals
Design Process
The design began with the clients’ commitment to sustainability and a goal of transforming a heavily hardscaped property into a regenerative landscape. Farmscape looked for opportunities to build soil, create habitat, conserve water, reduce waste, and capture rainfall throughout the site.
From there, the property was organized around productive and ecological spaces, including raised beds, row crops, an orchard, native planting, and permeable pathways. Water capture and drainage were integrated throughout, creating a landscape that works with the site rather than against it.
Material reuse became a defining feature. Concrete from the existing basketball court and pool was transformed into permeable pathways and a sculptural crevice garden, giving the material new purpose within the landscape.
The backyard has been transformed into a thriving edible landscape where raised beds, row crops, and a young orchard offer abundant opportunities for the family to grow food throughout the year. A sculptural crevice garden built from repurposed basketball court concrete anchors the space and brings texture and character to the garden.
Throughout the yard, permeable paver pathways and new planting areas work to rebuild soil and improve water capture, supported by carefully graded surfaces and large rainwater cisterns. What was once a barren, hardscaped yard is now a welcoming, productive space designed for harvesting, exploring, and enjoying the outdoors every day.
In the front yard, the family’s wish for two California redwoods defined the design. Custom terrazzo pavers (by Concrete Collaborative) provide a natural but stable pathway and weave from the sidewalk through a native garden to the front door of the home.
