Mountain View Handcrafted

Residential Project

Project Summary

This compact Mountain View backyard proves that great landscape design isn’t about having more space—it’s about making every square foot work harder.

Designed around a newly built ADU, existing edible gardens, and a love of outdoor living, Farmscape transformed a fragmented backyard into a seamless extension of the home that supports gathering, gardening, and everyday life while solving critical grading and drainage challenges.

Project Goals

  • Transform the compact backyard into a cohesive extension of the home for everyday living and entertaining.
  • Preserve and enhance the existing edible garden as an integral part of the landscape.
  • Resolve grading and drainage challenges around the new ADU.
  • Increase privacy through layered planting while maintaining an open, spacious feel.

Thoughtfully designed pathways connect the home, ADU, edible gardens, gathering spaces, and central no-mow lawn, making the backyard feel far larger than its footprint. Two-tone Orca pavers, flagstone, gravel, and drought-tolerant planting create an eclectic material palette that adds texture and visual interest while maintaining a sense of openness.

Before
After

Behind the scenes, careful grading and drainage improvements protect the newly constructed ADU, while screening plants and refreshed edible gardens ensure the landscape will become even more beautiful as it matures.

Design Process

On this compact property, the challenge was making every view feel intentional. The design creates distinct outdoor rooms while maintaining visual connections between them, allowing the backyard to feel significantly larger than its footprint.

Behind the scenes, grading, drainage, utilities, and circulation were carefully coordinated within the constrained site without compromising the landscape above.
