Project Summary
A dramatic dark palette provides the backdrop for a surprisingly lush and productive urban garden in Oakland.
Working within an aesthetic established by the homeowners and their interior designer, Farmscape layered ornamental and edible planting against nearly black architecture, fencing and hardscape. Deep foliage and burgundy tones reinforce the home’s distinctive character, while brighter greens, flowers and natural materials bring softness and movement to the landscape.

Project Goals
The compact property unfolds as a series of connected outdoor spaces. Edible crops are woven into the garden alongside ornamental planting, while a custom Batu hardwood bench, black-framed greenhouse, dark pavers and overhead lighting create an intimate backyard gathering space.
Design Process
The challenge was balancing a highly specific aesthetic with the realities of a compact urban property. The homeowners and their interior designer envisioned a dark, dramatic landscape, giving Farmscape a clear visual language to work within.
With multiple structures and gathering areas competing for limited space, circulation became a central part of the design. Planting, pathways, hardscape and custom elements were used to create distinct but connected outdoor rooms, while even the narrow passage between structures was transformed into an intentional part of the garden.
The result is a landscape that feels lush and layered without feeling crowded, using every part of the property while staying true to the home’s distinctive character.
Even a narrow passage between structures became an opportunity. Once a cold, shady and wind-exposed alley, the space is now a planted garden path that connects the home to the backyard and turns the journey through the property into part of the landscape experience.
The result is a garden that embraces the homeowners’ unconventional aesthetic while remaining unmistakably alive: layered, productive and designed to be used.
